So I have been extremely slack at keeping this up to date, so this will be a brief summary of what I have done to date!
Flew to Calgary for the Stampede! First day I got to go to Costco and then a real mall!! I loved it. I got to shop, buy all my makeup and then go see Traansformers 2 - Awesome!
Second day I got up at the sparrow farts to see the Parade. Wow that was fun (sarcasm a little)! Then I went to shop, but was way too tired, so went home. Then went out or dinner with Curt! Fun times.
Shayna and I went to the free breakfast at the Chinook Centre, then picked up her boyfriend, then went to the Stampede, saw the chuck wagons, and the Grandstand show in the rain, it was ok.
Sunday we went to the Rodeo, not that was FANTASTIC, except for the calf roping. The animas gave the cowboys plenty of grief and it was really entertaining.
Monday I caught the early bus to Golden, where Pam, Lib and Steph picked me up and we drove back to Fruitvale. We went to dinner with Hans and Marcia and it was great to catch up.
Tuesday 7th July, I woke up and saw a bear in the neighbours yard. Very cool. We had dinner at Hans and Marcia again, feeling ill.
Felt sick, I think it was food poisoning all week. I did not a lot for the week, feeling ill.
At the end of the week I was up to going out. I went out with Kelsey to Castlegar and I saw a moose. She pulled over, turned around and I got a few photos of the Moose!! Yay!
Monday we shopped Rossland and it was great. We caught up with Hans and Marcia again and packed up.
Tuesday we came to Vancouver, where I am right now! I was allowed to drive 4 hours to Osoyoos! It was sooooo good! No dramas, no animals to hit! Woo hoo!
Shopped today in Vancouver, got a new camera. Then Lib, Pam , Caro, Elouise and Steph and I went to Top of Vancouver for dinner. It was awesome. Got some great shots.
And now I am up to date. Glad to be not sick. Moving to Pan Pacific hotel tomorrow. Cousin Pete arrives Friday night, and I would like to take him to Whistler, Orca whale watching, Grouse Mountain and around Vancouve - maybe a little shopping!

Fun times
So I have not been up to much since my trip to Toronto. I did go to a friend's place for dinner last Saturday. It was hot and sunny, so hot even I had to move out of the sun. A couple of times I have gone to sit in the sun, but the mosquitos and black flies are horrendous! To sunbake you would need to put repellant on rather than sunscreen! I was out at midday last Saturday and the mosquitos were really biting. So I think that's out!
I have just been working and hanging out. I had culminating assignments due on Monday, and my only exam was Wednesday. I have marked everything and handed in my reports, which is good. We have a week with no students, then its summer holidays.
There has been no excitement except for the fact that someone got hold of my credit card number and has been spending up in New York, or New Jersey. So fun times on a Saturday working out what to do. Fortunately Fraud dept had cancelled my card, and I can place myself at school, so I don't have to pay. Man though it is a horrible thing though, you just don't feel safe.
Anyway that's my lot. I am sure I will have some further news in the future, and be able to keep updated on my summer holidays. Hoping to go Kayaking tomorrow at a friend's if the weather is nice! Finger's crossed, as it was meant to be nice, and its been raining all day!

Dave Matthews in Toronto
So I am slack and this is really late after the fact, but better than nothing.
Susan dropped me off at the airport in Timmins at 8am! Yeah, I got to wait at the airport til my flight at 10! I did at least get to catch up with some tv shows on my ipod. So I have Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th off tp mosey on down to Toronto and watch DMB! I leave at 10 am and arrive at 12pm. I catch a bus to the hotel, check in and enquire about a Thai restaurant, as I am really missing ethnic food. Timmins has Italian and Chinese! So I wander around and a while, through this underground PATH system, and make my way to Teaopia - where they sell some fantastic Chai tea leaves- even I can't stuff up the making of it! So went there then hit the Ivory Thailand had the best Penang chicken curry. I then went an shopped in the Eaton Centre. Looked heaps but bought not a thing!
I met Keryn and Steve, another exchange couple, for dinner. It was to catch up and talk to another Australian, they just get it and you don't have to explain things. We were able to compare and contrast what is happening. So very fun!
I then took off in a taxi to the concert - At the Molson Amphitheatre. What a stupid place. It is an open air thing - like Southbank, and it was really, really cold - very windy! Despite this fact DAVE MATTHEWS ROCKED!!!!!! Getting out of the place was a nightmare. The amphitheatre is heaps far from PT and 17000 people had to exit through 1 exit! Pretty shitty - took me 2 hours to get back to the hotel. But got there, slept.
Woke up and went shopping, tried to look for books, didn't buy much, pretty well behaved. Went and had lunch again at the thai place - omigod it was gooood! Then went and grabbed a Chai tea, and hit the road to the airport.
Gotta say I loved being able to access everything so easliy. Lots of fun. Kim picked me up and we had dinner, then I got home and crashed hard. All fun and games!

Joseph Boyden
Yesterday we were lucky enough to have author Joseph Boyden come visit the school. He has written a few books, and I have read the first "Three Day Road." The book is awesome! His second book "Through Black Spruce" won the Giller Award, which is huge here in Canada. Worth a bit of money too - $50000!
Anyway, read 3 Day Road and enjoyed it alot, was stoked to find out it wasn't some crusty old man, but a youngish hottie!! Pity he's married.
So he came to THVS and spoke to the Native kids and it was fantastic. He chatted and read an excerpt of the book. He has an awesome reading voice as well. It truly was a bonus that he came to visit the school.
He originally came to Timmins todo an appearance at an event at Northern College, and we had tickets to that. It was a local authors type thing, and Joseph and his wife (Amanda - also an author) were a huge attraction. They were good - Jospeh great- but the local authors part was long and tedious. I do know that the school visit was the better visit, as he got to talk, and it was more intimate. I had the best day!

Camp Bickell
So somehow I got roped into going to camp with some student leaders. Anyone who knows me KNOWS I do not camp. It was an interesting weekend, the kids were great. The food was ok, the other teachers were good especially one of the teachers from Moosenee. Nice people. The guy that organised it was incredible.
There was this weird game they played called Buck Buck. Talk about litigation waiting to happen. If you want to see video email me and I will send it. There was these twins there and man, chalk and cheese, they were hysterical! They did have this rule though, that if they forgot to say their name they had to spell it with their butt!
It was a long weekend and I am soo tired still, even after a week!!

19th May 2009
So I got back yesterday from a trip around Southern Ontario. Jes and I drove out of Timmins Saturday morning. First stop the Atlantic Watershed, all water runs to the Atlantic. We headed south through North Bay, where we stopped for me to get some Tim Tams. Pretty sure I told you before that there are Tim Tams in Sobeys! Yippee!!
From there we headed south again to Midland. Jess' cousin Natalie has a bakery there, and Jess had yet to visit. The bakery was great. Cakes and Pastries - yummo. Anyhow we ended up looking around Midland - which is a beautiful place. Then we headed up to Barrie. Jess' cousin and her boyfriend came up and we went to a Thai restaurant- That was divine. Never realised how much I missed Thai!
Sunday morning we went to Georgian Mall to shop. Oh My Gosh, I miss shopping too, although the credit card does not. It was funtastic! We left the mall after 4 hours, and drove to Port Carling. Here there is this fantastic mural made up of these little historical photos. Awesome! We also headed out to Parry Sound, and it was beautiful. All these old towns, and architecture. Driving through the country all the lakes were amazing, so pretty.
Ended up in Sudbury Sunday night. Missed Chapters, but ate at Kelseys - not that good.
Everything was shut Monday, we went to Science North - just like the Scicentre in Brisvegas, except they had a live Beaver, Porcupine and screeh owls!!
Last stop was the Artic watershed 1 hour out of Timmins, Sudbury side, all water flows to the Artic!!
On my trip I saw a dead moose, porcupine, racoon, and beaver. The only live animals were in Science North. I am still yet to see a live moose, and I don't want my first one to be in a zoo!! Anyway soon.

15 May 09
End of another week, nearly 5 months in Canada. Wow!!
Driving home today, about 5pm and it was about 15 degrees, the sun was beautiful, the air still has a chill to it. It's apparently headed into summer here and it feels like our winter!! Very funny!
It is May Run (Queen's Birthday) weekend. IT is a long weekend and I am all for that. We are off to Barrie tomorrow - our hotel is right behind Chapters bookstore. And sadly that is sooooo exciting for me! We are leaving Timmins tomorrow morning at 8am and going vis the Artic Watershed, and North Bay - for Tim Tams. Did I tell you Sobeys carries Tim Tams? Niiicccee!
Then we are headed off to Midland, where Jess' cousin has a bakery which we plan to check out before hitting Barrie. CHAPTERS!!! And a bar, maybe a movie, and shopping on Sunday before heading to Parry Sound and Carling, and ending in Sudbury!! More shopping on Monday. CHAPTERS!! Then heading back to Timmins for a short week before my birthday.
Woo hoo!!

Cree Opera
13 May 2009
So this afternoon I was lucky enough to get along to see the first ever Opera performed in Cree - the language of the Canadian natives. It is Called Pimooteewin, the Journey. It was operatic singing and some dance. Very interesting, although not my type of thing - as you all would guess. It was another experience here in Northern Ontario. They may be in the Olympics and I will be able to say I saw them. I was smart enough to go to the junior school showing, and not the long version - it was half an hour!!
So all good, it got me through a very long day. That's all.
Plan on driving around this weekend as it is a long weekend. Jess and I are off to Barrie and Parry Sound, Midlands and Carling for a look see. Check out the water and sights and sounds!!
Will let you know how the Big Nickel is Monday!

Summer Vacation Plans
Well I have booked my airfare to Calgary, where I will meet up with some people and go to the Stampede. Shayna Lang - a friend from Contiki- has offered my accomodation, and she is plannign our Stampede assault. I have to get myself a cowboy hat apparently - Where does one do that in Timmins?
Anyway, planning a trip up to the West Edmonton Mall in the first couple of days (apparently that's all there is in Edmonton) as its great shopping. I am hoping to catch up with a couple of friends in Calgary, and then meet up with Pammy, who is planning on bringing Steph to see Calgary. So then I will head back to Rossland and Fruitvale with the girls for a while til they head for a drive to Vancouver. This will be fantastic, as I will ge to see my favourite haunts with no snow. Certainly a new experience!
That's about as far as I have right now. Looking at hitting Seattle and Portland, maybe even as far as Salt Lake City to catch my friends from my Russia trip. Hoping that soe pals from Rossland will come for a drive at some stage, and also my cousin Pete may be headed over here.
Should be good!!

My Party
Been quiet here except for last Friday night. I hosted a party at my place. Not a huge turn up, but quality not quantity right? I had a great night. Despite earlier claims - If you drink enough Grey Goose Vodka does indeed leave you with a hangover!!
Anyway, all the staff that have been awesome to me showed, there were quite a number who said they were out of townm, and I think this was good, as I wouldn't have had too much more room for more people.
The more sedate crowd were in and out by 10pm at the latest and the interesting, drinking crowd hung longer. Both groups were good fun and it worked well!! I had a few Admin hang around til the end, and I am not sure if they wish they hadn't!! Ha ha. Anyway, I suppose what hppens in my basement should stay in my basement. But Good Times!!
I was extremely slow the next day, but did manage to go see Wolverine Sat nigt - AWESOME!!!

What the???
So yesterday afternoon it hit 20 degrees. Today it is snowing!! This is crazy. The sun and weather yesterday was lovely, crazy today!!
So I got out today, Alison Timmins - yes her name is Timmins and she lives in Timmins- took me out today and I had a wonderful time. We had lunch at a real restaurant, shopped at Pick of the Crop - best supermarket here, Walmart and Futureshop! It was so cool to get out. We even went to visit at the Outdoors show, seemed like every person in Timmins was there!
Last night Erin took me out for dinner and beers, and that was a nice evening.
All is good here, enjoyin the people and the place. I am currently planning my summer vacation, spoke to Pammy last night and organising to catch up with her in July. So its all moving.

Las Vegas Weekend
Well I am home safe and sound and in one piece from my 5 night stay in Las Vegas - Just! No not really.
I had a huge few days and I am still soo tired after 2 days back! I went to Vegas with a friend, Kim, from Timmins, and her room mates from college, and her best friend. Well they did like to party hard. We made the VIP lists to several nightclubs, and were out everynight til late. Let me say, I have never been out so late, so many nights in a row.
And may I suggest Grey Goose Vodka,as the drink of choce, as there was little to no hang over each day. I was very slow, but no massive head ache for sure!
So I got to see Elton John- great, but Mystere by Cirque Du Soleil was THE BEST!! After the party girls had left the city I went to see Cirque by myself and it was so fantastic. I would have seen more shows, but they wereon vacation. I didn't get to see the Grand Canyon - will have to take another trip, dammit, and do it with less alcomehol!
We shopped, lay by the pool and had a great weekend. All very excellent. Las Vega is just amazing. The Hotels were extraordinary, so lavish and incredibly decorated/ designed!!
We stayed at the Bellagio and it was sooo beautiful. Apparently one of the best on the strip. And it was just so divine. The people there were great and the accomodations awesome. It is just like you see it in the shows! There are no windows and clocks around, you totally lose track of day and time. And when you walk around people walk around everywhere with alcoholic drinks.Even shopping fo clothes and stuff, acohol everywhere! I must say at this stage if I never see alcohol again I could be happy!
Well that's about all, as we know what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but I must say I was pretty good for the most part. Yeah I know some of you don't believe it but that's your choice!

24 Hour Sports Marathon - 3/4 April
Well now, who's the sucker now? I am at home Saturday after 12 hours at school watching students doing a Sports Marathon. There were around 30, 10 of them great, the others were pains - totally! They refused to do what they were meant to - that is, do sports! I mean I was tired, but I wasn't stupid enough to sign up to do the sports! Half way throug I caught some kids in the building. Freaked me out, as they weren't the kids in the marathon. Anyway I got them out, and all good.
Super tired now, but survived it, with a little bitching at the kids - they refused to go out and help a teacher get her car out, even though it was stuck in the snow, and the were about to go home. After we have supervised them all night, can't even give Kim a hand. There was nearly 20 cm of snow overnight, I seriously thought I might have been stuck there with the kids for longer - that would have been terrific NOT.
So I am happy to sit today and tonight and vegetate.
Must say it was a great training for Vegas!

March Break
Well I finally have time and internet connection to update my blog. So here goes for the last week.
Saturday 14 March
Jess picked me up early and we took an 8 hour drive to Ottawa. It was long and very uneventful - it is quite a plain drive. There are heaps of lakes, all frozen over. And there were no moose!! dammit! So we arrived in Ottawa at about 4.30pm. Jess Dropped me off at the Novotel, where I had bookd in. It was across the road from the Rideau Centre. Looked very plain from the outside but really beautiful inside. Was really impressed with my room. So anyway, went for a walk to get some money and makeup from the Rideau centre. Got both then headed back for a nap as I was supposed to go out with Jess and her sister.
Jess turned up at about 8pm, and we started drinking, went out, met some people, had some fun. Jess' sister is a female Kuthrapali from Big Bang Theory - needs alcohol to talk to people! Was out late, had some fun, saw some of the night life in Ottawa. Late night.
Sunday 15 March
Hung over, slept in late, which was great in the hotel. Had to go out to eat. Walked around the Byward Market and Rideau Centre. Too tired to concentrate, walked around the old buildings, Saw the mint, the art museum and this huge big ass spider art sculpture. Caught up with Jess and her sister for dinner, went to a place called Momma Theresa's - very nice. Nice early night to catch some sleep.
Monday 16 March
Up early to catch the train to Montreal. It was a nice, although pretty boring 2 hour train ride to Montreal. Walked to the hotel - Hyatt Regency. Very nice!! Was checked in and moving by 12, so went for a walk to get some lunch. People had recommended Schwarz's deli. It had the best Corned Beef sandwiches ever!!
So after the half hour walk to Schwarz's I went downtown, ad then headed to the Bell Centre to see if I could get a ticket to the Ranger's Vs Montreal ice hockey game. Turns out I could get a ticket and a damn good one at that!
After all the walking around I was really tired, my feet were dying, so headed back to the hotel for an early night.
Tuesday 17 March
Decided I was too stuffed to actally make the most of my only full day in Montreal, so I got a half day tour of the city. It was the best decision, as I didn't have to walk anywhere and got a great overview of the city. We went all over the city and got to see so many things - architecture, Mont Royal, the old Olympic Stadium, Notre Dame cathedral, McGill University etc. Got some great shots, and some good info. Gotta say a church is a church.
I did however find the best church ever. I didn't actually go inside, but underneath is a shopping mall!! Love it! So shopped until Hockey time!
Went to the game, it was really good. Had a grest seat, and good views of everything. I am disappointed tho as there were no real fights, damn refs. Walked home, and was stoked to see Montreal has a nice, safe downtown.
Wednesday 18 March
Nice sleep, got up ready for the train back to Ottawa. Got into the hotel - Westin Ottawa- by 12 and wandered around the city to take some photos of the old Buildings. Parliament House, churches, old and new buildings all together. Jess came in and we went to dinner at the Works burger joint, I had Poutine for the first time - it's fries, cheese curds and gravy. Must say, pretty gross to be honest. Happy not to try that again! Jess drove me around to try and find some shoes that I had seen, with no luck - dammit! Ahh well. Home (hotel) in time to catch Criminal Minds
Thursday 19 March
More shopping, imagine that. No sight seeing. Saw the mvie "1 Week" with Joshua Jackson. Character finds out his dying so travels across Canada in 1 week. It was a great movie, for anyone interested.
Friday 20 March
Slept in, Looked around some more. Had to make sure I didn't miss anything. Jess and I went to The Blue Cactus for dinner, waited ages, but was worth it, food was great, drinks were great too!!
Saturday 21 March
Drove to North Bay, after a slow start. Spent the night there, and had a really great rib dinner at the Moose restaurant. Nice Comforst In room.
Sunday 22 March
Got back home, after a long and unineresting drive. I did see 3 deer, which was my first real live wild animals!! Very cool. So it was a nice relaxing afternoon. I think I am worried that I thought it was wamr, coming home to -5 degrees!!

Thursday - Polar Bears
I took my Travel and Tourism class to Cochrane to see the Polar Bears. They are so beautiful. Can't wait til the summer when you can swim with them. Well not really there is a big wall of glass between you, but apparently you can get some great photos. The kids were great, the trip was ok, and my new hat is awesome!!

I AM GOING TO VEGAS!!!
Yay, I am booked and so stoked I didn't rush and get tickets yesterday, as with a sale today I saved nearly $500! That covers my hotel room!! Woo hoo!
Going with a friend from school, she is such great fun! So it will be awesome.
Could this day get any better? I just had the most divine steak - didn't think Timmins had good meat! Found an awesome shop called "Pick of the Crop" - awesome fruit, vege and meat!!!

Sunday March 1
Slow day, trying to sort out the upcoming holidays. What to do, what to do!
Went out in South Porcupine last night to the Airport Hotel with Kim and Kelly. It was an eye opener for sure! Very Spec! Procrastinating now, don't want to mark. I am so stupid for giving the kids assessment!

Friday - SNOW DAY
Well its always good to hit a Friday, I was suffering extreme TGIF and woke to discover it had snowed over 10 cm and that they had cancelled school buses! Wow! Teachers have to go to their closest school, and kids can stay home! You really have to love this! So last time this happened 1 student turned up, but today I had no students in class! Yay! What a great Friday!

Saturday 21 February
Friday I made the students in my Tourism class try vegemite, man they were funny! Some of them actually liked it and wanted more. I also baked them Anzac biscuits, they totally liked them. I have been making them work really hard and so I gave them a break to catch up. And they were pretty good. Had a funny afternoon with Kelly and John in the office, the staff are sooo funny. John offered my celery in return for all the baking I have done recently, what a horrid consolation. Friday night I hung out with Kelly and drank beer and ate pizza. I drank beer, she had wine!
Saturday Kim picked me up and we headed up to the local ski hill. Kamaskotia is a tiny little hill, with 3 lifts and maybe 12 runs. It was a nice afternoon, we caught up with another teacher, another Kim, and Tom, the guy who took me snow shoeing a few weeks ago. It was a nice, easy going afternoon, no stress. I really enjoyed the hill, won't be buying a season pass in a hurry. Went to a restaurant for dinner, and nearly fell asleep at the table. Off to bed now.

Tuesday 17 Feb
Very exciting we had a fire evacuation today. Someone fired up the fire extinguisher. Dumbies got caught on the video cameras! We all had to stand outside in the snow (yep its snowing today) for 20 minutes. Some of these kids were wearing tshirts! They have the most excruiatingly loud alarm, which guarantees everyone leaves the building very quickly. I still don't have my hearing back! But it has been another interesting day, kids - not soo bad!

Sunday 15 February
I went snow mobiling!! Yeah it was soooo much fun. Amy picked me up in the morning, and I was dressed super warmly, and thank goodness for that! We went to the Kamiskotia Ski hill for a look and a beer. All very good. Then on our way back Amy made me drive a little way, and that was so totally fun!! So I want a snow machine!! Yee ha!
After that Jess came and got me to see "He'sJust Not That Into You" at the cinemas. It was ok, a little stupid, but watchable.
Monday - Its a public holiday here, and I cleaned, marked assigments, and vegetated!! Good times.

Mon 9 Feb - Sat 14 Feb
Monday - Work.
Tuesday - Surprise, suprise - work! OO but there were hardly any kids cos buses were cancelled due to non existent ice rain that was expected. Yay!! Best day too, cos I have my long teaching lesson. Tuesday night we had a year 8 Orientation night. It was longand tedious, not too many parents and kids turned up cos of the Ice day.
Wednesday - Work - I was shushed today. The other lady in the library wants the library to be a silent work environmet. Can anyone see that happening? As at home I am the loudest person in the library.
Thursday - Work
Friday - Doreen, the other lady was away. They didn't replace her, so the library was shut much of the day. So nice and quiet, except for me!! No shushing today!! It was a nice day, a litle busy at first, but it settled. Got my bank account opened finally, and got my international driver's licence that mum organised and sent. Express post it only took 2 1/2 weeks!
Saturday - I walked to Porcupine - from South Porcupine - it took soo long - 10 minutes! It is winter carnival. I walked to the college where they had dog sledding, and had a go on that. Poor dogs looked so tired., but I did it anyway, so I could say I did! Then I went and watched the parade down the streets. I caught up with Kelly, we then went and got some chilli lunch, then I had a go at Turkey bowling (yes I bowled a frozen turkey). Then I walked back home via the lake where there are heaps of huts where peole are ice fishing. There were trucks and snowmobiles driving across the lake, it loked so funny. Although you can hardly tell its a lake, all the white looks the same.
The snow is melting and it is all brown and yucky, and as the weather is nice and warmish during the day the snow is melting on the road and freezing at night, so it is icy around town. All an interesting experience none the less.

Tuesday - work
Wednesday - work
Thursday - work , but then one of the girls, Kim, took me shopping, oh to shop. I got to go to Walmart, Staples and Shopper's Drugmart. Oh the joy. I managed to buy a dvd I wanted and somethings for work. It was nice just to be somewhere else. We then went to East Side Marios for dinner. It was really great food and a good beer!
Friday - work, then I went out for dinner at the Dante club, which is, apparently, the best italian food in town. And it was really great. I went with Jane and her husband, Jane's been so good as to drive me to work this last week. It was great food and great company. I had a really wonderful night.
Saturday - I slept late, finished my book, I love being able to stay in late and it not feel so bad, as it stays dark, and is super chilly. It was freezing rain when I got up, and turned to snow. I made a pavlova for Kelly's bridal shower, then went for a walk to the grocery store. The snow was coming down quite heavily and I just had to get out into it, it was beautiful. Went to Kelly's shower at a girl's house from work, very nice house. That is the advantage for people to live up here in Timmins, its pretty cheap to live and buy really good houses. Rang Pete to see what was happening with Summer vacation. Its all on, which is good.
Sunday - finished reading the book "The Reader" very weird and not so good! Will not be going to see that movie. Got a handle on this new program I am learning for school - makes classes funner! So working really hard this Sunday for teaching, wow, who woulda thought it! Also doing the quizzes on Canada that the students have done for. Really interesting and at least one of them has given me an idea of where to go travelling - Tadoussac - I am going to see the whales!
Also watched Rocknrolla, it was ok, but really not worth the little screen time Gerard Butler has!
But that's about it. Off to do some baking fo school tomorrow!
Bye, Marnie

Update
So I am not doing a blog everyday, just going to catch up as it goes. I am just too lazy.
So Saturday I went snow shoeing with a teacher from work. John and his wife Helen took me out with a friend of theirs who is outdoorsy. I was planning for a nice half hour walk through the woods, 2 hours later.... I am so lucky I have been shopping and skiing lately, as although I was totally stuffed afterward, the next day I was not tired. Well a little, but all good.
Saturday night had 3 girls over from work for dinner. It as a really nice night. We ate, drank and talked, very funny. I didn't really want togivethem the blog address, just in case I have inadvertantly said something rude about Timmins. I hope not, and I doubt it, but still. But I did promise to say tht I had dinner with 3 crazy ladies from Timmins.
Sunday, I slept late, prepped for class and then went to see a movie. If you go see "New in Town" with Renee Zellweger, just keep in mind - this is me, except for the Harry Connick Jnr character. There's none of them out here. But I did laugh my butt off watching this movie. Then I spoke to Narelle and Sue at work. A good day.
Monday back to school. Had a good day. The class was ok, still have the same little snots here and there. But it should be ok. Did all my prep for the rest of the week, so we shall see. That's about it.

Road Trip and Drinks
I was picked up at 7.30am in the morninf and we headed to New Liskeard which is a 2 hour drive south east. We went to visit the Special Ed program there. I was with Kelly Pearce (special ed), Paul the deputy principal and Patrice, the Superintendant for Special Ed. It was an interesting drive, I learnt a bit about the school system and the school and teachers. The school was interesting, met the teachers and listened to what they do in the system.
I met a teacher here, who has taught up in the native areas, and knows this famous author - Joseph Boyden. I am hoping to get up to New Liskeard when he comes to speak. As ou know ther eis nothing I like better than listening to an author speak.
So we went to lunch then headed home. I had to be back in time for drinkd - it was actually all about me! And when I got there there were heaps of people. More than half the staff turned out, and it was great. I got to chat to most everyone and had a couple of drinks. All good. We were there for a while and I met some more awesome people that I lok orward to hanging out with. The Special Ed teacher Kelly, is an absolute scream!

Just have to assist with assignments and stuff. Nothing much exciting happened, Wednesday I went to lunch with the special ed team, and they were all very nice. Tomorrow I am going on a road trip to New Liskeard, to check out the special ed unit at the other larger school. This school is a 2 hour driveaway, we leave at 7am, what was I thinking agreeng to this? I am so stupid! But I did make sure I would be home in time for the staff drinks for me! Otherwise I wouldn't be going! Anyway, will let you know!

Australia Day
Well after my huge baking effort - 3pm - 7pm Sunday afternoon, I just want you all to know that my Pavlova did work, and the cream even whipped well! And EVERYONE loved it!
I had a really enjoyable day, everyone came up to sample treats, and to say hello. I actually remember some of the people's names! Woo hoo.
Not much else today, other than I lost and Engligh class that I was going to have to teach, instead I get to supervise the Special Ed class. This is good as I will have no planning and no marking. I just get to go in and help with assignments and homework! This I can do. Very nice.

Sunday 25 Jan: Toronto - Timmins
Sitting on the bus to the airport, picking up at all the hotels, we passed by the lake. And looking at the water, thinking that boats are grounded, as they are in solid earth, I realise that they are iced in, and that the lake is frozen, and the top of the water is actually frozen in little waves, it looked so cool! At this point I thought maybe I should have done some sightseeing rather than just shop, oh well, I am here for a year, hopefully I will get to that. I am not too cut up about that.
I am happy with my shopping adventures, despite the fact that I did not get a winter jacket. I will have to live with my ski jacket, and save money! See mum I know how to save money! Really! I think I can safely go back to Timmins and not spend a cent for the next month at least!
At the airport, and dammit Rocky Mountain fudge shop doesn’t have my rocky road candy apple, but I suppose that is a great thing, as I will save putting on even more weight. Off home to bake Australia Day goodies. Here’s hoping Corn Syrup will be ok to replace golden syrup – Will let you know!
Doreen was excellent enough to pick me up from the airport, and left me at the door "To start your baking!" Which I did. Had to walk to the shops at 4.30pm to get some cream of tartar for the Pav, and fortunately the freeze was worth it, as the pav seems to have worked, unlike my last Canadian effort t Christmas which was a strange flop! Had been a little scared to try again, but o far so good. I suppose I shouldn't talk soon!

Saturday in Toronto
Well dammit it I had to get up early to get to this In-service, which I assumed I had to go to now that I am actually here for it! What a waste of shopping time! I am devastated, yet I don’t know if my poor feet would handle any more! Damn these Doc Martens that just won’t break in!
So I managed to find the nearest subway station, realising that I am late and don’t have the name or address of the place I am headed to. I know it’s a school, but if I don’t catch up with Steve and Keryn I will be in a little trouble. My reasoning is that I will just call them and get them to send a local out to pick me up. As I am on the subway I am sure I recognise this guy on the subway, but that could not be, although if they are going to the same place, maybe. It’s not until I am on the second train that I hear him speak and know he’s Aussie and headed to the meeting too. I go and start talking to him, and fortunately he has the address etc. But it ends up Keryn and Steve pick up us from the station.
The mornings great cos I meet people and chat, everyone is excited, they all live very close to Toronto. We did meet a lady who hadn’t met any of her neighbours or many of her teaching colleagues. Very scary! We went to Swiss chalet for lunch which was really nice, and then I went into the mall with another teacher – Kay- to look for jackets. Again to no avail! So by the time I left Scarborough Mall I have decided that I tough luck, I am just shopping for pleasure. We caught the many numerous subways back downtown, we had to go far out for the conference.
I left Kay on the subway, and went to try one more place for a jacket then gave up. It was 4.30pm by now, and I believed all the shops to shut at 5pm. Much to my delight as I was walking around I discovered the bigger more important shops and the HUGE Eaton Centre were open til at least 7pm!! Woo hoo! So I shopped some more, got some great deals on 2 shirts then was headed home by 7pm. My feet were, of course, aching so were pleased to be finished!
I had a nice soak in the tub, with one of my new books and then settled in for some relaxation tv and blogging. So I am now caught up and up to date!!

Friday 23 Jan - Toronto
Woke up way earlier than I expected as I got to bed soooo late. Just lazed around for ages then headed down to the restaurant for breakfast. Buffet breakfast and there is a lady who makes your eggs to order – omelette and stuff – most excellent. There was also a waffle making machine, where you make your own waffles, and that was beautiful! I am so doing that again.
Then I headed out to shop. I started at about 11 am, serious for a warm jacket for warm ole Timmons. I find it really odd that a lot of shops don't open til late - 10/11am. I went to the Eaton Centre, now that is one serious shopping centre! There are 4 levels of shops. I bought this really nice jacket from RW and co for $30 marked down from $160. It’s not long enough, or probably warm enough, but who can resist such a bargain! Shopped at Lush, love it, and pretty much did not do so well finding a long black jacket. Oh well there is always tomorrow afternoon. I did get to the biggest bookstore in the world – seriously that is what it is called. Not sure that it really is, but it is great!
I ended up at the hotel, had a beautiful relaxing bath, soaking my sore, aching feet. Oh my gosh! Had a couple of hours to get organised before I had to go to the first part of the Welcoming Exchange Teachers conference.
I walked to the apartment building where the welcome night was. It was just 2 blocks away, and despite the sore feet, I survived. Still wary about the people on the street, but there were heaps of normal people out and about!
At the welcome I met a few people, I didn't get to as many as I thought I would. I met a lovely couple- Keryn and Steve- who are in Toronto. I was really impressed with them and found it very easy to chat to them. Organised to get a lift part way to the school and inservice with them. I walked home from the meeting, again wary, but bought a hot tea from Starbucks to throw at anyone that looked dangerous!! I got to drink it all instead. Not that bad out there!
That's about the wrap up though!

Thursday 22 Jan
Remembered to put the rubbish out, and to leave a tap running as I left the house this mornin. Apparently we have to do this to prevent the pipes from freezing in the super cold weather.
Went to work, did my organised shifts in the library, still can't believe they have people come to supervise when we are out of the library and in lunchtimes!!
I had a teacher, Kim Domers, come into the library to ask me out for a girls night in drinking on Saturday night. Unfortunately, again I had to decline as I was going to Toronto. I told her as such, she sat in the library and chatted. In the end she spoke to the lady who I had asked me to take me to the airport and cancelled her and took me out herself. She was awesome, we went and got food and a beer at the Irish Bar in town, Mickey J's. I think I have found a hang out buddy. She was lots of fun and so nice. Kim talked about getting her pilot friend to take us up and have a look at all the mines around town. Yes, Timmins is a mining town - Gold Mining and apparently there are heaps of sink holes and stuff which mark up the area.
Anyway, I got to the airport, caught the plane, and made it to Toronto with little dramas. Upon arrival at Toronto airport, got my stuff, and caught the airport shuttle downtown. I had planned on catching the public transport but Kim scared me off that - did you guys know that there have been shootings on the subway in broad daylight. So decided to take the safe option. Although no I have the jitters and am afraid of every person walking the 2 blocks to my hotel!
But had no probs getting to the hotel and checking in. LOVELY room - King bed, comfy. Got to bed late, but can sleep in Friday.
A couple of funny things really, I flew out to Toronto on the same plane I arrived on just a week before, and I worked 4 days then hd my first day not at school. (Teachers tell me not to say it is a day off, it was a travel day for Professional Development). I have to add here that I had a chat to my principal and he is a really nice guy, great about the travel and any days I need off. I will be able to let him know if I need days. So all is good.

Wednesday 21 Jan
Went to school as per other days. Still meeting people, and kids. Got a better idea of what I will be teaching, although still not real sure of the nitty gritty!
One of the teachers that went on exchange a couple of years ago came into the library to ask me snow shoeing on the weekend. So really nice, as I am sure people are going to keep me busy through the year. At least I hope they keep asking me places!
I walked to the local grocery story, it was a nice balmy -10 degrees, so totally safe to walk! Very exciting. Went and picked up all the fixings (I hope) for my Australia Day baking! We shall see.
I packed for my trip to Toronto, as I am headed to the airport straight from school tomorrow afternoon.
And that is my excitement. Woo hoo!

Tuesday 20th January
Ok, so second day of school pretty much followed the same path as the first. Settling in, meeting teachers, trying to find out about what I am teaching. Met some of the shop guys and they are checking out the car situation. I, of course , am not in any hurry to get a car as I will have to drive on ice.
Nothing really exciting so a very short and sweet post for today.
Oh we did have Obama's Inauguration showing in the library. Can't believe the number of students who came into the library to watch it. Probably to see it he got assassinated, same as me!! Was really good to watch though, especially as there was no killings!

First day at work 19 Jan 09
So I got picked up at 7.50 am in the morning, which was really tough, as I have not been up before 9am in the last month! Jane picked me up slid on the ice leaving my road - despite the fact the she is driving a truck!
Got to school, and Jane dropped me at the office to meet the Principal - John Sullivan. I met the office staff - there are 3 male administration - haven't seen that in a while. They all seem really nice. Was all prepared to get the official school tour, from Al Mclean the deputy, but instead was given duty in the library very first period. The library head was gone to class already, so was not really given therun down. I flailed for 5 minutes, then kicked butt! I then got a chance to have a chat to the Principal for a little while. Very interesting, and sounds so the same as in Aus.
I met so many people, people kept coming up and introducing themselves. So many names, so little brain cells left to remember them all. I think I have to go cross country skiing, as everyone here seems to do this! And so many people have offered to take me out. I also have been offered the opportunity to go to the quilter's guild on Wednesday night - apparently Australians are awesome at quilting, the don;t know me, yeah I know!
They library is nice, small, only used for study and computer classes, and has teacher supervision when the librarian is teaching. Amazing! But the books are horrid! Oh well!
Well I got through the day, got home and pretty much flaked out! I was so tired from doing not much - don't tell anyone though!
Oh well enough of today. Later

Day 3 and 4 in Timmins
So day 3 I got to sleep late, it's Sat andI think I am still on BC time. To bed late and sleeping in. After I got it together, Kelly Robinson and Susan Klooster picked me up and showed me around Timmins. Took about 20min to drive my place on one side of the town to the other, so it is a huge town. And I now understand why Cynthia was so anxious about driving- driving through town on a Sat we were lucky to come across a dozen cars! Well maybe a few more, but not many more.
We checked out the mall, which has the only book store - shock horror! But apparently there are about 8 Tim Hortons! (I do not understand this craze/ love of Tims, I don't like it) Then we went to FUTURESHOP!! Yes there is a Futureshop, as well as Walmart, Staples! I am quite happy with this. Anyway, Futureshop, I got my universal powerpack for my laptop and was back online! 4 days with no email, I nearly died! I had had access to check emails on my ipod touch, but couldn't send. But all good.
Then did my grocery shop and all is well. I got home, put stuff away, and I got a call from Alison Timmins. yep her name is Timmins and she now lives in Timmins. So she asked me to dinner and I went with her and her boyfriend to Boston Pizza. Now this place was cranking, newly opened and the whole town of Timmins was there. Well not all, cos 40 000 people could not fit in there, but it was busy. It was a nice night, checked out Alison's home, very nice. Then hit home.
Sunday was very boring, and I loved it. Slept late, then just relaxed and prepared for school on Monday. All good.

Day 2
I got up to see Cynthia off at 4am, what was I thinking? Then again at 7am to make sure her mum got off. Then back to sleep.....ah the sleep.
After the interruptions I then slept real late!
Wandered around, got really hungry, as I have no car and no real food that I eat. Managed to scrounge, then settled down with a cup of tea to watch wonderful, wonderful cable TV. I have had no tv for 3 weeks and now, most excellent lotsa channels!
So Battlestar Galatica all afternoon in anticipation of Episode 1 of the final season! Got pizza delivered, spoke to Alison, a lovely girl from Cynthia's work, who rang to check up on me, and then went to bed! Very boring day, but man I loved it.
I did consider walking to the shops at one stage during the day but at - 30's I was concerned I might freee to death on the way! What a great excuse to stay at home.

Day 1 in Timmins
I arrived in Timmins after a horrible 2 days full travel. That is Libby and I sat in the Castlegar airport from 8 in the morning til 3.30pm, only to be told that no flights would be getting in or out that day, or possibly the next. Five times Rhonda, the Air Canada lady, changed my entire itinerary hoping the next flight would get out. So the decision was made to catch the greyhond overnight to Vancouver. The initial 5 hours were bearable as the bus was virtually empty. Getting to Kelowna was a shock, as there were 2 full busloads of people waiting to go to Vancouver. The Kelwona airport had been cancelling flights all dy as well. Damn cloud! So it was chockers for the nex 7 hours.
We arrived in Vancouver at 5 in the mornig, reallycold and really dark. I caught a taxito the airport and checked in. Thankfully no one weighed my bags, and I got them on the plane. The lovely lady at Vancouver even deposited me at the baclk of the plane, where I managed a couple of hours sleep stretched out across 4 seats! Woo Hoo!!
After a 6 hour flight (I think, as there were time changes and stuff) I got to Toronto airport. And waited the 3 hours til my delayed Timmins flight.
I got into Timmins and nearly froze my nostrils off walking from the plane to the terminal, it was -30degrees! Bloody cold! and then getting to the car.
I met Cynthia, and her mother, and checked out the house. We went through all the bits an pieces, then I got to go to bed! Never has a bed been so comfortable and welcome.
